CD band foregoes day at band camp to serve community

Ask anybody who's been through band camp - it is hard work, leaving the musicians and performers hot, sweaty, and tired. On Friday, August 8, however, about 100 students and staff members of the Central Dauphin High School RamBand will take hot, sweaty and dirty to a new level, as they dedicate a day of Band Camp to the group's inaugural Community Service Day.

RamBand members will work at one of four local agencies - Joshua Farm, Silence of Mary Home, Wildwood Lake Sanctuary, or Central PA Food Bank. The students will work at a variety of tasks, from sorting and labeling food donations, to stream cleanup and trail maintenance, to gardening or painting. Matthew Ceresini, CD High School band director, developed the idea to include a service day into band camp.

"A fundamental goal of the band program at Central Dauphin is excellence," explained Ceresini, "which means not only as a musician but also as a member of our community. We are grateful for the overwhelming support we enjoy from our friends and neighbors in the Susquehanna Valley and spending a day volunteering is a small way we can give back."

As part of their Community Service Day, the students will spend some time learning about the agency where they work, including meeting with staff and clients.
